Fare Class Basics
In a short and simple definition, the various fare classes divide every seat on the plane into different categories, each with its own price and rules. JetBlue Airlines fare classes are identified by one-letter fare codes. Following are some of the fare codes that are same across all the airlines:
- Y: Full-Fare economy class ticket
- J: Full-Fare business class ticket
- F: Full-Fare first-class ticket
These letters are used as short forms on message boards like FlyerTalk to refer to the "generic" class of service.
Fare classes are used by JetBlue Airlines reservations systems and travel agents to see seats of the planes, keeping a record of which fare classes are still available.
JetBlue Airlines' New "Blue Basic" Fare
JetBlue Airlines have recently added a fare class known as "Blue Basic" which is parallel to legacy carriers' basic economy. Like other Basic Economy fares, all the passengers who purchase Blue Basic fares at a time of JetBlue Airlines Reservations will need to pay in advance for seat selection and can't change their flight tickets as the tickets are completely non-refundable.
Blue Basic passengers can earn fewer TrueBlue frequent flyer points i.e. 1 point per $1 spent as opposed to 3 points per $1 spent for the "Blue" fare.
JetBlue Airlines "Blue Extra" Fare
JetBlue's "Blue Extra" fare class creates new flexibility by including changes in advance or same-day and allows easy flight cancellations. This brings consistency to the refundable economy fares of other major carriers, but it is the most expensive economy offering for JetBlue Airlines.
JetBlue Airlines "blue" and "mint" Fares
"Blue" and "Mint" fares will remain the same, both in terms of flexibility and rate at which travellers earn frequent-flyer miles.
JetBlue Airlines' Mosaic members will still retain their perks except for "Blue Basic" fare class, which only allows early flight boarding to Mosaic members.
Mosaic Members can enjoy the benefit of up to 2 free checked bags.
Revised Policy on Non-Refundable Fares (w.e.f. Jun 8, 2021)
JetBlue Airlines ticket cancellations or changes for nonrefundable fares (Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra and Mint) can be done for the difference in airfare prior to scheduled departure. If not done on time, all money associated with the nonrefundable ticket (Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra and Mint) will be forfeited. Travel agencies are recommended to process their ticket reissues on their own as this will allow them to maintain the ticket control.
JetBlue will not issue waiver codes for voluntary changes or ticket cancellations and nonrefundable airfares are not allowed to submit for refund via the ARC/BSP settlement process. For any refunds granted on nonrefundable fares, JetBlue will issue a debit memo in the amount of the fare plus a $50 Service Charge. The travel agency's client(s) will not be eligible to a credit for future JetBlue flights if the debit memo is paid.
For nonrefundable JetBlue Airlines flight tickets booked prior to Jun 8, 2021, change/ cancel fees are waived and changes or cancellations can be done for the difference in airfare prior to scheduled departure.
JetBlue Flight Cancellation Policy for Mosaic Members
Mosaic members can change or cancel their nonrefundable Blue Basic ticket easily without any charges as compared to the same-day switch fees charges for non-mosaic members. Please note that nonrefundable fares cannot be refunded to the original form of payment and any extras (such as pet travel, Even More Space, etc.) will be refunded if cancelled before flight departure time.
